Valverde: "Winning always gives you confidence"

The gaffer spoke to the press at Lezama before Athletic's LaLiga fixture against Sevilla FC on Sunday (16:15 CET)

Ernesto Valverde admitted that despite the physical and mental toll of Thursday's clash with AS Roma it has given Athletic Club a huge morale boost ahead of the upcoming international break.

However, before the players are released for international duties, the Lions face a tough test against Sevilla FC at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan on Sunday (16:15 CET).

"Winning gives you confidence and a fresh impetus," Valverde said at his pre-match press conference.

"We're in good shape and we're happy, but Sevilla have been waiting all week to play this match against us.

"We're in a good position in LaLiga, but our opponents behind us are applying the pressure and when you have an advantage you have to be decisive and precise. After this fixture, there are 10 left to play and every result become worth much more."

Ernesto Valverde warned of Seville's strength at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán. The Andalusians have been in great form of late and are closing in on place for European qualification.

He said: "I think Sevilla are getting better and better. They were at the bottom of the table but, little by little, have made progress until being in the fight for European places.

"They're in good form from a competitive point of view and it's always been difficult for us to play there. It's a difficult stadium to play at and their fans are very passionate.

"They have a very combative front line. Their players really press opponents in one-on-one situations and we will have to be very strong."
