Mikel Jauregizar extends contract until 2031

The Lezama academy graduate adds for four more seasons to his current deal, with this new agreement containing no release clause

Mikel Jauregizar has signed an agreement to extend his previous deal for four more seasons, keeping the midfielder at Athletic Club until 30 June 2031. What's more, his new contract does not contain a release clause.

The 21-year-old midfielder has impressed this season, making a total of 48 appearances during his first full campaign with the senior team.

Mikel officially signed his new deal at San Mames on Friday morning alongside club president Jon Uriarte and director of football Mikel González.

The Lezama academy graduate is one of Athletic Club's most promising emerging talents, having made spectacular progress since joining the club from his local side, Bermeo FT, in the summer of 2021.

Mike has made great strides at Athletic. After playing ten games last season, Ernesto Valverde gave him a huge role in the 2024/25 campaign.

In addition to his capacity to lead the press from midfield (only surpassed by Pedri in term of steals in the opposition half), Mikel dictates play in the centre of the park and also provides a threat in front of goal. The Bermeo native has scored three first-team goals, the most recent of which was the opener against Manchester United in our Europa League semi-final second leg at Old Trafford.

Jauregizar, who Oscar de Marcos has chosen to inherit his number 18 shirt, the number which our retiring captain took over from Carlos Gurpegui (a key coach in Mikel's youth career), is set to join up with the Spanish Under-21 team for the upcoming European Championships in Slovakia.

This renewal falls in line with the club's ongoing contract policy of combining a stable salary with performance-based bonuses.
