Goalkeeper Olatz Santana joins Athletic Club Women
The shotstopper moves from Real Sociedad, signing a one-season deal with an option to extend for another year
Athletic Club and Olatz Santana have reached an agreement for the Real Sociedad goalkeeper to join until 30 June 2026.
The 27-year-old goalkeeper played one game last season and made three starts in Liga F the campaign before.
Since 2021 she has been between la Real's reserve team and senior side. Her debut in the top flight came on 9 May 2021 in Lezama, in a vibrant derby that the Lionesses won 2-1 in the final minutes.
Santana began to put on the gloves in her native Hernani, before moving on to Añorga KKE and SD Eibar. In 2019 she arrived at Zubieta where she played together with current Athletic shotstopper Adriana Nanclares.
Athletic Club president Jon Uriarte was present at the signing ceremony at Ibaigane Palace along with Athletic's director of women's football, Xabi Arrieta.
Olatz is looking forward to meeting her new teammates and is grateful and excited about this new opportunity.
She also commented that playing alongside Nanclares in goal gives her a lot of peace of mind and said that together they make a good pair.
"I've been in Liga F for several seasons and although I haven't had much of a leading role I think I can bring experience to the young players," she said.
She also added that will be "special" and "interesting" to return to Lezama after making her debut there years ago in Liga F.
