42 LEGACIES: Aitite (Grandad)

Athletic Club features in one of five short films co-produced by LaLiga and Prisa. The story exemplifies the Athletic Club legacy, passed from generation to generation, via Galder Reguera's memories of his grandfather, Pablo Olabarri, and Jose Angel Iribar

Athletic Club features in the third episode of 42 LEGACIES, a LaLiga and Prisa project that forms part of LaLiga's campaign called '42 Legacies. 42 Ways to Win'.

The Athletic short film focuses on Galder Reguera, Athletic Foundation's director of operations and strategy, as he narrates a personal story relating "the person he loved most in the world", his grandfather, Pablo Olabarri, and legendary Athletic Club goalkeeper Jose Angel Iribar.

An emotional and symbolic anecdote that reflects Athletic's sense of identity: a love for a team that's different. A club that goes beyond football as it represents a way of life and the Basque Country.

The anecdote speaks of a legacy and spirit passed from generation to generation. Just as Galder's grandfather instilled Athletic's values in him, Galder is now doing the same with his children.

The short film, narrated by Galder Reguera himself, combines historical footage with modern-day scenes from a match day at San Mamés. The script, based on previous texts published by Galder, pays tribute not only to Pablo Olabarri and Jose Angel Iribar, but to all the grandfathers and grandmothers who have shaped and continue to shape Athletic’s legacy.

A sense of belonging

This new collaboration between Athletic Club and LaLiga is the latest in a series of initiatives that form part of the '42 Legacies. 42 Ways to Win' campaign.

Recently, Antonio Megías, an Athleticzales from Andalucia, came to San Mames for the first time, joined by his wife, María, and grandaughter Andrea, for our match against Real Betis.

Athletic Club has also joined in this weekend’s Retro Matchday, whilst Gorka Guruzeta has been one of the campaign’s leading figures, recounting how his father inspired his passion for football.
