Athletic's players to pay tribute to their mothers at Mendizorrotza
To celebrate Mother's Day in Spain, the Lions will wear their mums’ surnames as shirtnames during Saturday's derby against Deportivo Alavés
For Saturday's derby against Deportivo Alavés at Mendizorrotza, which falls on the same weekend as Mother's Day in Spain, the Athletic Club players will use their mums’ surnames as shirt names in honour of the vital role their mothers have played in their personal and professional lives.
By Spanish law, every person has two surnames, their father's family name and their mother's. What's more, unlike in several countries around the world, women don't change their maiden name when marrying, but instead keep their two family names.
