Víctor Martín to coach Athletic Club Women

Víctor Martín, 33, is the new Athletic Club Women head coach. The Madrid-born coach has a signed a one-season deal through to 30 June 2027.

Martín has been in charge of Atlético de Madrid for the past two seasons. He also has experience in Liga F with Madrid CFF, having managed the team on two separate occasions.

He put pen to paper on his deal at Palacio de Ibaigane alongside club president Jon Uriarte and the women’s director of football, Xabier Arrieta.

Víctor's most successful season was the 2024–25 campaign, when he led Atlético to third place, ahead of Athletic, securing the team’s return to the UEFA Women’s Champions League. He also finished as runner-up in the Copa after losing the final to FC Barcelona. Last season, Atlético were knocked out of the Champions League by Manchester United in the round of 16 and Martín then left the post in January.

A graduate in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences from Francisco de Vitoria University, Martín began his coaching career at an early age. He spent six seasons at the Madrid CFF academy, winning a title every year. He took the reserves into the Segunda División and took charge of the first team in Liga F for the 2018–19 season, becoming the competition’s youngest manager at 26 years old.

The Madrid-born coach then moved into men’s football. He joined Albacete Balompié to take on the role of director of methodology and first-team assistant coach. After that he took on a new challenge in Uzbekistan, as assistant coach and analyst at Metallurg Bekabad.

Following this international experience, he returned to women’s football in January 2023, rejoining Madrid CFF. During one-and-a-half seasons in charge of the Madrid side, he achieved the club’s best-ever league finishes, with a fifth place at the end of the 2022–23 season and a sixth place in the 2023-24 season. After that, he moved to Atlético.
