The player from Navarre arrived at Athletic from Villarreal as a 15-year-old. Predominantly a right-winger, but capable of playing on the left and through the middle, Nico has a cultured left-footed, likes to run at his marker and is instinctive in the opponent's area.
He got his first taste of LaLiga action in 2021/22, splitting his time between the senior team and Bilbao Athletic. Serrano also scored his first goal as a Lion that season, hitting a wonderful volley to give Athletic victory over Rayo Vallecano at Vallecas.
Nico has needed to bide his time for a full senior-team breakthrough, accumulating experience on loan at PEC Zwolle, Racing Ferrol and Sporting Gijon. However, in 2025/26 the winger has started to establish himself, producing some important performances and goals, such as his strike against Atalanta in the Champions League.
