Athletic Club Women notched a second consecutive victory after defeating Valencia CF 1-3 in the Mediterrenean city. The Lionesses have won their first three away games and have nine points on the board ahead of Real Madrid’s visit to Lezama on Sunday.

A brace from Yulema Corres and a goal by Ane Azkona were enough to Athletic overcome a one-goal deficit and beat the hosts on Wednesday night.

In the first half Athletic Club gave Valencia some clear frights. Vanesa Gimbert, from a set piece, almost gave the Lionesses the lead in the fifth minute, but her shot was blocked by a defender.

Yulema Corres and Peke both tried long-range shots, but had no luck, and shortly afterwards Lucía García had another good chance. Valencia CF were not getting a foothold in their opponents’ box and Iraia Iturregi’s side controlled the match.

However, the hosts took the lead in the 25th minute through Carro, who beat Quiñones from a strategic move. The Lionesses found the equaliser through via a Yulema Corres header in the 38th minute.

At the restart, Azkona had a great chance on the counter-attack, but her shot went narrowly over. In the 65th minute, one of the floodlights in the Antonio Puchades stadium went out and the match was paused.

After 10 minutes without light or power, play was resumed. Yulema Corres put the Lionesses ahead a minute later with a finessed finish. Erika Vázquez came on to equal Iraia’s tally of 402 official appearances for Athletic.

Lucía García, on a fast counter-attack, went close to scoring with an effort inside the box, but the game was still in the balance.

Lucia then set up Ane Azkona for the winner. The no.16 made it 1-3 and gave Athletic Club more peace of mind. Iturregi’s side now have three more points, and have won all their away games so far in 2021-22.

This Sunday, the Lionesses will host Real Madrid in what will be the Athletic’s first game of the season at Lezama.
