The Lionesses’ unbeaten streak comes to end in Huelva
The Lionesses lost 2-0 after struggling to breakdown Sporting Club de Huelva’s well-organised defence
Athletic Club Women lost 2-0 on their visit Sporting Club de Huelva on Sunday morning. The Lionesses struggled to breakdown the home side, with Anita Marcos getting both their goals.
Sporting Huelva took the lead in the ninth minute as Athletic struggled to adapt to the pitch at La Orden. Anita Marcos was set up Mayra, scoring a half-volley past Mariasun Quiñones.
The Colombian was one of Huelva’s biggest threats in a first half. Athletic got stronger as time went on, playing close the Huelva’s area during the last ten minutes of the first half. Arana and Nekane had the clearest chances.
After the break, the script remained the same, with the same protagonists on both sides. Nekane and Arana had chances, but Anita Marcos scored again for the home side on a counter-attack.
Around the hour-mark Erika Vázquez came off the bench to equal Eli Ibarra’s record of 413 appearances. Iraia Iturregi’s side kept going until the very end but Huelva’s deep defensive block did well and kept Athletic at bay.
It was complicated match which sees the Lionesses unbeaten run come to end. Now it is time to regroup with Athletic hosting Atlético Madrid at Lezama on Wednesday night.
