Athletic Club Women lose against Atlético
Las Rojiblancas fall to defeat after conceding three first-half goals in Madrid

Athletic Club lost 3-0 on their visit to Centro Deportivo Wanda. The game became an uphill battle early on as Las Colchoneras scored twice within the first 15 minutes. To make matters worse, Valdezate was forced off with a knee injury.
With Iraia Iturregi in the stands serving a touchline ban, her side were deservedly beaten by a team stays in third place for another week.
The clash did not start well for the Lionesses, in the eighth minute Barbara Latorre took advantage of a through ball to beat Mariasun Quiñones. Shortly after, Leicy Santos made it 2-0 in another quick move to give Oscar Fernandez’s side peace of mind and confidence.
In the 27th minute, Lucía García latched onto a good long throw-in from Valdezate, but the striker’s first-time shot was cleared off the line by Lolo Gallardo.
Just past the half-hour mark, Oihane scored an own goal past Quiñones to make it 3-0. As if that wasn’t enough, Valdezate hurt her knee on the stroke of half-time and had to be replaced by Gimbert.
The opposition had the game more than wrapped up and Athletic Club needed to find a way back after the break. Peke had a shot easily blocked by Lolo. Mariana Cerro also went close as the Lionesses began to grow into the match.
However, a handball in the area by Ane Azkona gave the Colchoneras a chance to increase their lead. Fortunately Mariasun Quiñones was alert enough to sav the spot-kick.
In the final stretch, Athletic made some dangerous forays into the rival area, but they could not find a way past Lola Gallardo. Mariasun Quiñones then prevented the home side from extending their lead, denying Ajibade in a one-on-one situation.
Athletic Club dropped all three points and will now have to prepare for the final three games of the season: UDG Tenerife, Alavés and Sevilla.
