Great win over Betis

The lionesses clinch their second victory in a row in the Primera Iberdrola, thanks to goals from Azkona and Garazi, while the Andalusian team could not find the equaliser

Ángel Villacampa, Athletic Club’s manager, had asked their team for a string of two wins and they fully complied in their match with Real Betis, held at Lezama. The lionesses prevailed 2-1 over the Andalusian side on matchday 6 of the Primera Iberdrola, recording two consecutive victories for the first time this year, after having previously won over Real Sociedad last weekend.

In the same way as Nekane gave the Red and Whites a prompt lead in the previous match -opening the scoring as soon as the game started at Reale Arena- Ane Azkona has put her team ahead in the game today on 2 minutes. The forward netted in a cleared ball that had been crossed from the right flank, the side of the pitch where Athletic’s pressure was most dangerous during the first half. Real Betis tried to react immediately with a shot from Priscila, but Nekane, in the 7th minute, and Marta Unzué, with two strikes a little later, went close to adding a second for the hosts.

In the dying minutes of the first half, as well as at the beginning of the second one, Real Betis was able to create several chances to bridge the gap. However, on 55 minutes, a cut inside the area from Ane Azkona hit defender Cazalla’s hand, winning Athletic a penalty that was converted by Garazi. Betis responded with a goal from Van Dongen, who put the ball into the back of the net after several clearances that followed a corner-kick. This resulted in a single-goal margin that added excitement but, thanks to the lionesses’ confidence, remained intact until the end. On the downside, Nekane and Jone Ibáñez were forced to leave the field with injures that “do not give grounds for optimism”, as their manager has expressed.
