Athletic Club have prevailed (4-1) against Rayo Vallecano with a large goal margin in the tenth Matchweek in the Primera Iberdrola, where the lionesses resumed the competition after a two-week break. The Red and Whites had a good performance all round in the first half, not lowering the bar in the second one.

The match started with a forgiving Azkona, who missed a clear occasion for Athletic two minutes into the game. It was their first warning. The Red and Whites stepped onto the pitch with great strength at Ciudad Deportiva del Rayo Vallecano, playing extraordinarily in the first half. There were several chances to open the scoring. Yulema Corres gave it a try from outside the box with a powerful strike that hit the woodwork.

The first goal arrived on 29 minutes, netted by Azkona, after Ohiane Hernández had assisted her from the right flank. With a clear red-and-white control, Villacampa’s side increased the goal difference thanks to Valdezate’s goal, who scored her first goal with the first team just before the interval.

Soon after the second half had begun, following a corner-kick taken by Unzué, Damaris scored the 0-3 in which was her 100th match as an Athletic Club player. On 51 minutes, the match was clearly sentenced, even more so when Yulema Corres managed to score the 0-4 after a great individual play in the 68th minute, beating the opponent’s goalkeeper with a low shot. A goal that had an almost immediate response, Yael Oviedo added the first one for Rayo soon afterwards.

In the final minutes, the team from Madrid tried to get back into the game, but Athletic’s defence prevented it, remaining sturdy all game long. The lionesses gave a great impression in their comeback after the league break and lifted their spirits to face the final stage before the end of the year, with a view to reaching the top positions in the table.
