Ending 2019 on a high note

The Red and Whites knew how to recover from a bad first half and crushed Sporting de Huelva 0-3 in the last match of the year

Athletic Club Women’s first team could not have finished 2019 better after a 0-3 win this evening against Sporting Club de Huelva. The addition to these three points to the tally makes up a total of 23, with five league matches unbeaten. Ángel Villacampa’s side showed two versions of themselves during the match. Throughout the first half, Huelva controlled the game, getting to the box a good few times, but after Peace Efih was dismissed for being double yellow-carded on 40 minutes the Lionesses woke up.

The first few minutes were full of uncertainty for Athletic. Not being capable of adapting themselves neither to the pitch nor to the gale-force wind, the Red and Whites suffered the constant attack of the hosts. Andere Leguina, who was playing her first match this season, performed with enormous confidence whenever she received the ball. The fixture could have taken a different turn if Tanaka would have converted the penalty kick taken from the 12-yard spot, awarded after Oihane had touched the ball with her hand inside the box. In spite of missing it, the Andalusian side continued launching dangerous attacks.

On 40 minutes, the referee sent Peace Efih off for being double yellow-carded, and that decision made the Lionesses react. After Azkona’s run on the right flank, Erika was able to send the ball into the back of the net. They entered the break with one more player and the goal advantage.

A short time into the second half, Lucía García increased the goal difference one more time after a great play from Azkona. Finally, Yulema Torres rounded off the scoring with the 0-3 goal on 78 minutes. The weariness overcame the team from Huelva, who were playing with one player less during all the second half, and the red-and-white side adjusted to it and clinched the three points in Huelva.

A close to the year that could not have been better for Athletic Club, who will enjoy the Christmas break with a good taste in their mouth and ready to face the first match of the year on January 5, against FC Barcelona at San Mamés.
