Athletic had the win in their hands, but Betis equalised in the last minute.
Athletic Club and Real Betis drew 2-2 in their Primera Iberdrola matchday three fixture. Sosa put the visitors ahead and two goals in quick succession by Maria Díaz and Lucia García saw the lionesses turn the game on its head. However, a header by Betis’ Altuve in the dying minutes rescued a point for her side.
In the third minute of the match, Eunate almost caught Betis by surprise, her shot nudged onto the crossbar by the opposition keeper. A little later, Bea Parra forced Athletic debutant Amaia Peña into action, Amaia sending the former’s shot out for a corner. The side from Seville then took control of the fixture, they kept possession well and the lionesses barely got a sniff at goal. Once again Parra made Amaia work for her money, but the debutant rose to the occasion.
Betis’ Altuve had a clear chance from a corner, but her header went wide. Athletic could not find their feet although the connection between Eunate and Moraza down the left looked dangerous. What is more, Betis’ keeper, Meline, was always ready when needed. Half-time arrived with no goals for either side and everything to play for in the second half.
Villacampa’s side came out flying after the break. Eunate’s crosses were regularly punched out by Meline, but Athletic had definitely gone up a gear. In the 53rd minute, a shot by Nekane hit the crossbar. The lionesses overwhelmed the visitors causing them all kinds of issues. The game then started to even up again, it was very end-to-end, vibrant and lively.
In the 63rd minute, Betis went 0-1 up after Athletic lost possession in the middle of the park. The equaliser came in the 70th minute, Maria Diaz with a left-footed screamer after some great work by Valdezate. Two minutes later, Athletic took the lead. Eunate once again playing a central role, sent in a good ball to Lucía García who tucked the ball away nicely.
La próxima semana habrá parón liguero y la cuarta jornada llevará a las de Villacampa a Paterna, para enfrentarse al Valencia CF. Athletic seemed destined for the three points, but then in injury time Altuve got on the end of a cross to equalise. No reward for their efforts, but the lionesses remain undefeated in the Primera Iberdrola this season. Athletic now get a week off before facing Valencia CF in their next league fixture.
