The lionesses couldn’t find a breakthrough despite controlling the affair
Athletic Club Women drew 0-0 with Rayo Vallecano on Saturday morning. The lionesses dominated proceedings, but were unable to make it pay. Despite generating several chances, Athletic couldn’t find a way passed Larqué in Rayo’s goal.
In the first half, Athletic ruled the roost. They exclusively played in Rayo’s half of the pitch, with the visitors barely having a sniff of Andrea de la Nava’s goal.
Larqué, on the other hand, was kept extremely busy by Athletic’s fowards. Jone Ibañez went close after getting a touch on Nekane’s cross, but Rayo’s shotstopper was on full alert to snuff out the danger.
Lioness striker Yulema Corres then tried her luck from danger but her effort was stopped by Larqué. Athletic’s best effort of the half came through Oihane, whose cross-shot hit the crossbar just before the referee blew for half-time.
After the break, Larqué saved a powerful shot by Naroa Uriarte. Then in the 68th minute, Yulema had another go from distance, but once again Larqué turned it away for a corner.
The lionesses were utterly dominant but couldn’t break through a compact Rayo defence. Ibáñez sent a shot wide from a corner and Naroa had an effort smothered by the keeper after a rebound.
Time was running out and Athletic desperately looked for a winner. In the 86th minute, an Ibáñez shot went agonizingly wide of the left post. The lionesses kept pushing until the end but had no luck in front of goal.
