The Lionesses pick up a point in a hard-fought encounter against Sporting Huelva
Athletic Club Women and Sporting Huelva drew 1-1 at Lezama on Sunday morning. It was a close match in which the Lionesses had several chances to make sure they won all three points.
Both teams made a nervous start in an opening passage that lacked rhythm. Nonetheless, Athletic drew first blood, with Leyre Monente finishing off a well-worked team move in the 12th minute.
After the goal it was Sporting Huelva who took the upper hand, while the Rojiblancas dropped off the pace of the match. Huelva’s Yoko threatened on a couple of occasions, although Moraza did also have a great opportunity for Athletic.
Lucía García could also have doubled the home side’s lead, but Huelva’s keeper, Anna, was up to the task.
Dany almost found an equaliser for Huelva after the break and Athletic had chances to break the deadlock with two counter-attacks, but Anna was ever alert to deny the danger.
Huelva levelled the scores in the 73rd minute. Yoko collected a rebound to finish past Andrea de la Nava. Athletic almost hit straight back with Lucía García striking the woodwork.
The Lionesses pushed hard for a winner in the final stretch. Azkona was kept out by a strong Anna hand, and the Huelva keeper, who was in great form, once again frustrated Lucía.
Athletic kept going but couldn’t find a breakthrough. The match ended 1-1.
