Athletic completely dominated the affair and Iraia Iturregi’s girls took three important points thanks to a great second half performance. Summer signing Peke got her first Lioness goal before the break and Yulema Corres sealed the win in the 88th minute.

The first half could not have got off to a more exciting start. Before the first five minutes were up, Esteve and Lucía García threatened for each side. Miriam also could have put Eibar ahead after evading Quiñones and missing an empty net.

The Lionesses soon responded. Lucía García stepped into the area and was brought down by Elba. Lucía García stood up to take the spot-kick, but Malena guessed where the ball would go and prevented Athletic Club from taking the lead in the fifth minute.

The game continued in the same vein and Arena sent Quiñones flying, with the keeper making an acroatic save to stop the hosts from going ahead. Azkona had an effort soon after, but Malena made a fine double save.

In the 38th minute, Arola equalised with another shot across goal. The scores were level at the end of a thrilling first half.

After the break, Lucía almost put her side ahead, but she failed to beat Malena and in the following corner a goalmouth scramble almost saw Athletic score a second. The Lionesses continued to attack Eibar tirelessly, but were unable to find the target.

Eibar, subdued by Athletic’s dominance, were looking to counter or try their luck shots from outside the area. But the siege was constant and their frustration grew as they were unable to break the deadlock.

With two minutes of normal time remaining, Yulema Corres made it 1-2 with a header from Itxaso Uriarte’s corner. The Lionesses persistence got its reward and they will travel to Valencia on Tuesday with three more points in their pockets.
