On Thursday, 13 October, IMQ has summoned in San Mamés 110 students from the Health Sciences Faculty of the University of the Basque Country to offer them the guidelines to follow while rendering medical assistance during each match played at that ground.
This call has its origin in the agreement entered during the 98/99 season between IMQ and Athletic Club by which the insurer guarantees medical care coverage to Athletic Club teams as well as to spectators during matches played in San Mamés. Also, this medical assistance is possible thanks to the collaboration between IMQ, the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and UPV’s Nursing School.
Those responsible for the insurer that provides medical assistance, UPV (UBC) and Athletic Club’s Medical Service will offer students indications on how to proceed before incidents that may occur in San Mamés. Thus, IMQ experts will explain to students the importance of how to react following a specific order that makes the process and decision making more efficient when faced with an emergency. To assess, to communicate and, finally, to react are -in this order- the basic guidelines to follow before rendering medical assistance.
Thanks to this cooperation agreement between IMQ and Athletic Club, the insurance company shall render medical assistance to the 40,000 spectators in attendance at Athletic matches in San Mamés as well as being the official healthcare insurer for all members of the different Athletic Club teams, from the Premier team to the Women’s team.
To do so, for each match it deploys a workforce made up of 130 healthcare workers and four ambulances (one of which is fully-equipped with life support). In addition, IMQ has four cardiac rescue columns installed in San Mamés, which turns it into the first football ground that incorporates the Integral Cardio-protection Service (semi-automatic defibrillators), for the treatment ‘in situ’ of cardiac disorders.
