Finally! After 34 long hours of travel, we are in Jutiapa-Honduras. In the short time we’ve been here, we have been first-hand witnesses to the situation in this country. To reach the town of Jutiapa, we had to take a ‘carro’ (car) for 4 hours, time period that gave us a chance to see the shanty towns in which they live, the businesses they run, and their peculiar way of driving.
We arrived at the parish where we will be lodged during our stay and our welcome could not have been better. Everyone has been very amicable and quite aware of our well-being.
The first night has been rather peculiar, roosters crowing and dogs barking all night, impressive humidity and mosquitoes on guard to attack us any time. However, we rested and at 7 we were already having breakfast to head toward the Siloé Natural Medicine Centre, where Sister Rita explained to us everything about the elaboration process of the medicines that they make and she offered us a delicious purifying green juice made with ‘chaya’ and lemon.
The food here is far better than we expected thus the idea of returning with a few less kilos is out of the question.
In the evening we’ve held our first training session with the town’s children; fifty boys and girls eager to learn, simply have fun and always with a smile on their face. From the start we came here with the idea of promoting football or sports in general in children and we have been surprised by the amount of children that have participated. It has been a very enriching experience for our first day here. Now, it’s time for dinner and getting a good night’s rest as tomorrow we have a double session.
Come on Athletic!
