Raul Garcia’s competitive gene is well known to all Athletic Club fans. The player from Navarre is one of those who does not even like to lose in training, but above all he is one of those footballers who does not like to be questioned about his dedication and the attitude of his team-mates on the pitch. “I want to win on Sunday to make people aware about how important is this for us. We want them to encourage us, because we need them.” he said in Lezama.
Raúl doesn’t want to hear about rumours, about malicious comments that point to the idea of staying out of the seventh, about the bar chats that draw sketches about the European playoffs and the holidays of the team. “I don’t care about playing playoffs, as if I don’t have holidays, I don’t care. When I’m competing and I have a goal nearby, it’s the priority for me. Europe is a goal that involves doing well, it’s a beautiful competition and we’re working for it”. He doesn’t want to make compromises, nor does he want to pull a calculator, even if he knows that the three-point lead of six to play is a situation that many opponents would like to have in their favour. “We don’t depend on others, all we have to do is win, and if others fail and we can in the sixth position even better,” he said.
He knows that they will plays againts a Celta with much to lose. The pressure and the need of winning to stay in the first division, will surely complicate the match more for the red-and-whites. But so that there aren’t any doubts about the motivations of the players, Raúl resolves them of the most direct way: “On Sunday I want to win as if we were in the last positions of the classification”. In case the message isn’t clear.
