Garitano: “We must keep being humble”

The red-and-white boss warns: “The fact they haven’t won yet makes them an even more dangerous rival”

Before their last training session prior to their trip to Leganés, without having yet released the call-up list for their next outing tomorrow (Butarque, 7 p.m.) in LaLiga Santander matchweek 6, Gaizka Garitano has talked to the media. Confident about the performance of their team -“If we are leaders, it’s because we deserve it”-, the red-and-white boss has repeated his message of caution: “We must keep being humble. If we didn’t, we would be wrong. A game between the first and last teams is significant in matchweek 35, but in matchweek 5 it’s merely anecdotal. We are all aware that the difference between Leganés and Athletic in the table is not the real one. We also know that if we don’t have a good game, we will hardly be able to get anything from it. They’ve always been strong at home, and the fact they haven’t won so far makes them even more dangerous because they have the urge to do it. I don’t trust anyone, let alone Leganés.

As for Athletic’s performance on the road -two draws to date-, Garitano has been realistic about his team’s possibilities: “Winning away as many games as winning at San Mamés would be unrealistic. Winning all home and away fixtures is out of our reach. However, in pre-season we played as visitors against great rivals -in Germany, Italy or England- and we weren’t defeated. Of course, our intention is always to get better and better, but I think the team is doing well on the road.”
