Lucía García: on the hunt for the Pichichi

The forward, who is currently with the Spanish national team, has become the focal point for Athletic’s attack thanks to her six goals in the first nine fixtures of the 2020-21 campaign

The goals keep coming for Athletic Club Women striker Lucía García. So far she has scored six goals in the Primera Iberdrola meaning she is just two off the current top goalscorers, Real Madrid’s Kosvane Asllani and Atlético Madrid’s Ludmilla.

Asllani’s eight goals -three were penalties- have come in eight matches and 636 minutes, whilst Ludmilla’s -which included a poker against Deportivo Abanca last week- came in nine matches and 723 minutes.

Lucía has taken eight matches and 656 minutes to net her six goals. She scored a brace against Sevilla, strikes against Real Betis and Madrid CFF in Lezama plus another brace in Athletic’s recent fixture against UDG Tenerife.

What’s more, Lucía’s goals always bring results. In the current campaign to date, Athletic are yet to lose a match in which she has scored, notching up two wins and two draws. In fact, the forward’s two goals in the last ten minutes against Tenerife were vital in Athletic coming behind from two goals down to rescue a point against the then league leaders.

It was a brace which was aided by Eunate Arraiza, who now sits joint top of the Primera Iberdrola leaderboard for assists thanks to having set up five goals.

Lucía García’s goals account for half of the total amount put away by Ángel Villacampa’s squad (12). In the first nine games of the season, María Díaz has scored three times, while Erika Vázquez, Yulema Corres and Leyre Monente have one goal each.
