Athletic Club central midfielder Mikel Vesga said he was delighted at being able to extend his contract with the lions.
Vesga’s previous contract was due to expire at the end of this season, but he has put pen to paper on a new deal which will keep him at Athletic until June 2024.
“It’s a very special day for me,” Vesga said about the contract renewal at a press conference in Lezama. “It’s great to be with this team for three more years.
“I know for certain this is where I want to be and my biggest wish is to remain here.”
The lions travel down to Madrid this Saturday to face Atlétco Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano (16:15 CET).
Although, the rojiblancos have had little time to prepare after the competitive 2-3 defeat to FC Barcelona last night, Vesga believes Athletic will be coming back to Bilbao with some points in the bag.
“It’s a busy month,” Vesga added about the January playing schedule. “With very good opponents and little time in between fixtures.
“On Saturday, we face the league leaders and they are in good form.
“Nevertheless, I believe we’re capable of playing great matches and this Saturday will be one of them.”
Vesga also spoke about the first few days of life under new Athletic Club manager Marcelino, adding: “I’m sure the decisions made are for the best, and so that the team keeps growing.
“We’re going to work hard and work well with Marcelino. You could see what he has in mind during the first part of last night’s match.
“We’re going to adapt well to his style of play. I’m sure it’s going to be great.”
