De Marcos signs one-year contract extension

The experienced first-team footballer pens a new deal

Athletic Club and first-team footballer Óscar de Marcos have reached an agreement to extend the player’s contract until June 30, 2022.

His former deal was set to expire at the end of the current season, and the new contract does not contain a release clause.

De Marcos arrived at Lezama in 2009-10, making his club debut that same season in a Europa League qualifier against Swiss side, Young Boys.

The 31-year-old versatile footballer is now into his 12th season at Athletic and has made a total of 410 first-team appearances, putting him at 15th in the Club’s all-time list, only 24 away from 10th-placed Canito (434).

Óscar is one of the team-leaders and continues to play an important role on the pitch. So far in the 2020-21 campaign, he has played in 10 LaLiga Santander fixtures as well as the two Supercopa matches.

Two of his 34 career goals have also come this season. The most recent in Athletic’s 5-1 win over Getafe at San Mamés and the other in the Lions’ extra-time win against FC Barcelona in the Supercopa final.

In fact, it was De Marcos’ 42nd-minute goal that initially drew Athletic level with the Catalans after Antoine Griezmann opened the scoring.

Óscar de Marcos will hold a press conference this evening at 17:30 CET prior to a first-team training session.
