A round-up of all the action from Athletic’s battling 2-1 defeat at the Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday night.

The Lions were unlucky to come back to Bilbao empty-handed after proving to be more than a match for LaLiga Santander leaders Atlético Madrid.

Athletic took the lead in the 21st minute when captain Iker Muniain tucked away Iñaki Williams‘ cutback from the byline. The Rojiblancos dominated proceedings, but Atlético equalised against the run of play just before half-time, with Marcos Llorente scoring a header.

The home team completed their comeback five minutes after the break when Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez was awarded a soft penalty, which he subsequently converted.

Athletic continued to fight hard for the equaliser and centre-back Unai Nuñez almost got it in stoppage-time, but it just wasn’t to be for Athletic on the night.
