Real Sociedad, our 16th different Copa final opponent

The San Sebastián-based side will face Athletic for the first time in the final, the Lions’ most common last-stage opponents to date have been FC Barcelona and Real Madrid

On April 3, the Estadio de La Cartuja in Seville will host an unprecedented Copa del Rey final between Athletic Club and Real Sociedad. Despite the fact that la Real is one of the six teams Athletic has played most often in official matches, this will be the first ever time the two teams have faced each other in the final of the cup competition. FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are Athletic’s most regular rivals in the battle for the famous trophy, with the Lions’ having played both sides nine times in the Copa final.

This will be Athletic’s 40th appearance in the final round of the Copa -with four coming in the last 11 years- and the Rojiblancos are going for a 25th trophy. The match in Seville will be the fourth all-Basque final in tournament history. Athletic Club took on CD Vasconia in 1910 and Racing Irun in 1913, while Real Unión and Arenas de Getxo faced each other in the 1927 final.
