Marcelino: “We weren’t at our best level”

The coach acknowledged Real were better on the night: “It’s a sad day, but from tomorrow we have to bounce back to get to our best before we play Barça.”

Athletic Club manager Marcelino García Toral bemoaned the Lions’ inability to really get going during the Copa final loss against Real Sociedad.

The Rojiblancos fell to 0-1 defeat at La Cartuja, but have the chance to make amends in two weeks when they take on FC Barcelona at the same stadium

“We had a lot of hope we could win, but we haven’t managed to do that,” Marcelino said after the match.

“When you play in a final and you lose, that’s a very tough moment.

“We have to draw our conclusions calmly, once the sadness has passed, to reflect on what we haven’t done well and change it.

“The dressing room is down now, but we have to pick ourselves up and carry on.”

The Athletc manager looked back on the match and spoke of what lies ahead for the Lions.

“We were not ourselves and when we stray from our usual version, what happened to us can happen. They outplayed us and we have to congratulate them on their victory,” Marcelino added.

“The first half was very even, but the first piece of play in the second half created doubts and then the penalty kick decided the match.

“We said before the game that the details were going to be decisive and in those details Real were superior.

“I’m not disappointed, before the game I was very proud of my players and I still am. But I am sad.

“Fortunately we have two finals in 15 days and from tomorrow we will try to gradually get better every day so that we can be at our best for the match against Barça.”
