The Lionesses’ unbeaten run comes to an end

The Lionesses lost 3-1 at the Wanda Sports Centre despite being ahead at half-time

Athletic Club Woman unbeaten run in the Primera Iberdrola has come to an end after a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Atlético de Madrid.

Lucia García’s goal saw the Lionesses head into the break with a 0-1 lead but Atlético fought back in the second half and took home all three points.

The Lionesses played a great first half. They were determined and decisive, starting the match at a steady pace. In the eighth minute, Lucía fired over after getting on the end of a well-placed cross by María Diaz. In the 24th minute, however, she made no mistake with another of Diaz’s crosses, sending it into the back of the net after an initial rebound.

Atlético Madrid began to get forward with danger. Long-range shot by Leicy Santos and Knaak were their clearest chances.

At the start of the second half, Iturregi’s side conceded when Laurent scored from a poorly-defended cross from the left.

Meseguer almost completed the comeback when she connected with a corner at the near post. In the end, it was Laurent, a half-time sub, who turned the game, getting her second of the morning.

The Lionesses continued to suffer under the pressure exerted by Sánchez Vera’s side, who almost scored again. It was Knaack who made it 3-1 in the 74th minute. In the last few minutes, Athletic Club tried to reduce the deficit but were unsuccessful.

Now it’s time to recover and turn our attentions to another complicated game on Wednesday against Primera Iberdrola champions FC Barcelona.
