Ceremonial kick-off for Sotera

Athletic will pay tribute to the Santurtzi rowers, winners of last weekend’s Kontxako Bandera, in the match against Rayo Vallecano

This Tuesday before the match against Rayo Vallecano, Athletic Club will pay tribute to Sotera from the Itsasoko Ama Rowing Club of Santurtzi, the team which won its fourth, and first since 1985, Kontxako Bandera (Flag of the Concha race) last Sunday in the bay of San Sebastian.

The Kontxako Bandera, which takes its name after San Sebastian’s famous beach known as ‘La Concha’, is a popular rowing regatta, connected to the sport known as Estropadak.

The teams, which consist of 13 oarsmen and a coxswain, race in a trainera – a long rowboat historically used for fishing and whaling around the Bay of Biscay.

The Kontxako Bandera takes place during the first two weekends of September and is considered the premier estropada event of the season.

What’s more, the Sotera rowers have the chance to do the double this weekend in the separate estropada league competition, the Eusko Label Liga.
