Zarraga: “I’m improving with every match”

Speaking ahead of the match against Granada, the midfielder insisted “the goals will come” and said the Lions will need “San Mames’ support” on Friday

Athletic Club midfielder Oier Zarraga said he is adapting to well to playing in LaLiga Santander, adding that he feels more comfortable with every appearance at this level.

The 22-year-old made his debut last season but saw his progress slightly hampered by injury. However, he has been increasingly involved since the start of the current campaign and impressed after coming off the bench in the second half of last Friday’s 0-0 draw with Levante UD.

“I’m improving with every match, but I have to keep working,” Zarraga said at a pre-match press conference ahead of this Friday’s match against Granada CF in Bilbao (21:00 CET).

“Little by little I’ll keep getting more minutes, this is only my second year. I’ve just started and we’ve got a very good squad, so I have to prove to the coach that I deserve minutes. I always give everything I have, and I go into training with the mindset of being a starter.”

When asked to describe himself as a player, the midfielder responded: “I like to play at a high-tempo, looking for quick transitions, to move the ball forward and get into the box. I’m confident in my ability and I can play across the midfield, in the centre and on the wings.”

After picking up three draws and a loss in their last four matches, the Lions are desperate to lay down a marker in their fight for a European spot and get back to winning ways. Zarraga said putting in a good performance in front of the San Mamés crowd on Friday will be vital.

“It’s important to be strong at home. In difficult moments, the fans help us a lot,” he said about the support at The Cathedral. “We’re going to need that boost. Working together we can achieve what we want. What better opportunity to get that momentum back than playing at home.”

Athletic currently have the best defensive record in LaLiga Santander but despite creating plenty of chances they are lacking effiency in attack. Nonetheless, Oier is optimistic about the rest of the season.

He said: “I think the start of the season has been good. In my opinion, we’ve improved compared to the end of last year. It’s true that in the last few games we’ve struggled, but I’m confident in our work. The chances are there and the goals will come.”
