Muniain: “We want to lift the Supercopa again”

Iker Muniain said the Lions will “do everything possible to make the fans proud” on Sunday night

Athletic Club capitain Iker Muniain admitted the players are desperate to get their hands on the Spanish Super Cup trophy again.

The Lions will look to win the competition for a second season in a row when they take on Real Madrid at the King Fahd Stadium (Sunday, 19:30 CET).

“It’s always difficult against Real Madrid because they have decisive players and lots of quality throughout their squad,” Iker Muniain said at the official pre-match press conference on Saturday afternoon.

“But we won this trophy last year and we want to make the most of this new opportunity. Athletic haven’t played Real Madrid in a final for a long time and we’re really looking forward to it. What we want is to lift the Supercopa again.”

Real Madrid have won the Supercopa 11 times, most recently in 2019/20, and they currently lead the LaLiga Santander table, but Muniain stressed that Athletic will also pose a threat on Sunday night.

“In terms of desire, will and ambition it could be said that we’re better,” the captain said.

“In December we faced each other twice almost back to back. We stood up to them and played well. We could have won both matches.

“In a one-off game, anything can happen.”

Ahead of such an important day, the skipper sent a message to Athletic fans all around the world, saying: “Obviously, this is an important day. It’s a big match and there’s silverware at stake.

“For the players, the club and the supporters it’s an exciting day. I know all our fans will be paying close attention to the match.

“We’ll do everything possible to make sure they can be proud of us.”
