The Opponents

Founded in 1910, Cadiz CF have spent a total of 14 seasons in the top flight. The Andalusian team first reached the Primera División in the 1977/78 season, but have been up and down ever since.

After years of various promotions and relegations, Cádiz CF consolidated their position among the best teams in LaLiga between 1985 and 1993. However, they were relegated again and after 12 years in the Second Division, they did not regain their place in the First Division until 2003.

They dropped out of the top league in 2006 and even went down the Segunda B Division. But Cádiz re-emerged, climbing up the ladder and back to the Primera under Álvaro Cervera, who was replaced by Sergio González this January.

Cadiz are currently 16th in the LaLiga Santander table and are in high spirits after beating FC Barcelona at Camp Nou last Monday. The Andalusians are in the battle for survival but have managed to gain some breathing space after recent positive results.

As well as defeating Barça, Cádiz CF beat Villarreal at the Nuevo Mirandilla and drew against Valencia CF at Mestalla. On the other hand, they lost narrowly to Atlético Madrid and Real Betis, two teams fighting for a Champions League place.
