Raúl García triggers contract extension

The no.22 meets the targets to extend his stay at Athletic Club, while he also overtook Raúl González to become the third most-capped player in LaLiga history

Raúl García will spend at least one more season at Athletic Club. The striker’s performances on the pitch have seen him meet the targets set out in his previous contract, allowing him to extend his time in Bilbao until 2023.

The no.22 will now head into his eighth season as a Lion. With 293 games and 80 goals for Athletic, he is already a Club legend. What’s more, seven of those goals have come this season, six in LaLiga and one in the Copa semi-final against Valencia CF.

With his appearance against Valencia CF on Saturday, the forward also overtook Raúl González to become the third-most capped player in LaLiga history. He has now played 551 times in the competition.

Raúl has surpassed storied players such as Leo Messi, Manolo Sanchís, Paco Buyo and Eusebio Sacristán this season, but he is still some way behind Joaquín (597) and Andoni Zubizarreta (622).

Over half of those appearances have come at Athletic (234), while the rest were at Atlético Madrid (216) and Osasuna (101), where he came through the youth and has had two spells. A genuine LaLiga icon.
