Valverde: "A draw is not enough for us"

The Gaffer bemoaned the Lions' inability to "turn dominance into goals" against Getafe on Saturday

Athletic Club head coach Ernesto Valverde admitted to being disappointed his Lions could not come away with all three points against Getafe CF on Saturday afternoon, while also praising his side's "great defensive work".

Los Leones had 65 per cent of possession and 16 shots on goal, but struggled to find a way past Getafe's David Soria.

"A draw is not enough for us. We went for the game, but we couldn't turn our dominance into goals," Valverde said after the game. "We tried in every way we could and the draw almost feel worse because of that."

Athletic are back in action at San Mames on Tuesday night, when they face CA Osasuna in the second leg of their Copa semi-final, a tie in which they are currently 1-0 down on aggregate.

Valverde said: "It's a different game. It's winner takes all. Each team has its strengths and weaknesses and we will have make sure we leave everything on the pitch to make it to the final."

After full-time, midfielder Oihan Sancet announced his long-term contract renewal in front of thousands of fans from the San Mames semi-circle.

The gaffer added: "It was great news for him, for the club and for the fans. We would like to have celebrated it with a win."
