Third consecutive win for the Lionesses

Third consecutive win for the Lionesses

Athletic beat Levante Las Planas thanks an early Peke goal

Athletic Club Women notched a third consecutive Liga F win with a 0-1 away victory over Levante Las Planas on Saturday afternoon.

The Lionesses could have scored more goals in what was a frenetic, action-packed first half. The Catalans fired first warning, but it was Peke who opened the scoring in the 7th minute. Irina had two clear chances to equalise, but couldn't get the better of Athletic's Amaia Peña.

Athletic's Paula Arana kept Levante's defence on their toes at the other end. The hosts' Mari Paz Vilas tried her luck with a bicycle kick. Peke had another great chance, but Doris Bacic turned it away for a corner and then Arana forced the Croatian to make another save.

The score was 0-1 at the break, but Athletic could have been further ahead based on how well they were playing.

The Municipal de Les Planes, which was packed to the rafters, got right behind their side for the second half. Athletic's Valdezate cleared an effort in the 53rd minute and Levante Las Planas subdued Athletic for a few minutes as Ferran Cabello's sought an equaliser.

In the 67th minute, Peke went close to putting away a well-worked counter-attack from the midfield. Nevado then had a similar chance and Peke had another chance blocked by Bacic.

The Lionesses dug deep in the closing stages as they held on to a slim lead against a side in dire need of points to secure their survival. In stoppage time, Amaia was on hand to close down Lina and deny them a leveller.

There was no time for more. Another three points and a third consecutive victory for the Zurigorri, who are in fine form as the seasons draws to a close.
