De Marcos signs one-year contract extension

The right-back, who has played 40 games and more than 3,000 minutes this season, will spend a 15th season at Athletic Club

Right-back Oscar de Marcos has agreed a new one-year deal to take him into a 15th season with Athletic Club. A boyhood Athletic fan, Oscar joined Los Leones in 2009.

As has been the case in previous years, the defender waited until the final stretch of the season to assess his form, physical health and state of mind before deciding whether to continue. What’s more, he has once again signed without a release clause.

De Marcos has made 40 appearances so far this season, his defensive consistency and attacking contributions making him an ever-present in Ernesto Valverde’s starting XIs. Only Nico Williams has played more minutes this campaign, while Oscar is also tied with Nico as Athletic’s top assist provider on six.

With his involvement against RC Celta, Oscar played his 496th match for the Lions, moving level with Piru Gainza at seventh in the club’s all-time appearance-makers’ list. In the current squad only Iker Muniain is ahead of De Marcos in those rankings. Two Supercopas, four Copa finals, a seven European campaigns, which include a Europa League final, ensure Oscar is rightfully regarded as one of Athletic’s modern greats.

The Alava-born players is matched by his off-field achievements. His commitment to the Club’s values means Oscar is a vital link between the team and fans. He personifies Athletic’s unique identity and is a firm fan favourite.
