Vesga extends his contract until 2027

The midfielder has played an average of 40 games per season in the previous three campaigns

Athletic Club midfielder Mikel Vesga has put pen to paper on a new three-year deal which will keep him in Bilbao until June 30, 2027.

The midfielder, who is in his seventh season with the first team, has become a key player for the side, making an average of 40 official appearances in each of the previous three seasons.

The Vitoria-Gasteiz native joined Lezama in 2014 and spent two seasons at Bilbao Athletic before going on to make 189 appearances and score nine goals a Lion. Two of his strikes came against Real Betis in the current campaign, kicking off the comeback in our 4-2 win at San Mames.

Supercopa champion in 2019/20, Vesga has signed his contract on Thursday morning at San Mames in the presence of club president Jon Uriarte and director of football Mikel González.

González stated Vesga prolonging his stay at Athletic was positive news for the club, pointing out that the midfielder "is a fundamental part of our current system of play".

He added: "He is the most complete positional midfielder: he gives us balance, defensive power, aerial strength, a great ability to get forward and turn the game. To all this we have to add his ability to take penalties.

"He is a player with pedigree and experience. His number of starts and availability in recent seasons makes us think he will continue to be just as important as he is now."

In line with the Board of Directors' policy, Mikel Vesga's contract has a fixed salary structure with a variable component based on objectives.

The player will hold a press conference on Wednesday 27th at Lezama when the Lions return to training after the Christmas break.
