Dani García to leave Athletic Club

The midfielder leaves after almost 200 appearances and with two medals in his cabinet, the 2021 Supercopa and the 2024 Copa del Rey

Athletic Club central midfielder Dani García is set to leave the club after making just shy of 200 appearances in his six seasons here.

The player departs Bilbao with two medals in his cabinet, the 2021 Supercopa, in which he played the entire tournament, and this season's Copa del Rey.

García, who turns 34 this Friday, quickly became a regular after joining from SD Eibar in 2018/19, making 32 appearances in his first season at Athletic. He has only played less than 30 games a season twice, the last two years. In 2022/23, he featured 29 times while this term he turned out 18 times.

His first and only goal for the club came this season, when he headed home an Oscar de Marcos cross against UD Almería at San Mames.

An excellent teammate, Dani always put the group before himself. "I couldn't forgive myself if they said I was a bad substitute," he said publicly when once asked about his declining game time. A true example for the youth players coming through the ranks at Lezama.

He came to Athletic with the dream of playing in Europe, an objective he hasn't been able to accomplish, but he leaves with the side back in continental competition and with the major achievement of having sailed aboard La Gabarra.

Athletic Club would like to thank Dani for his dedication and professionalism over the last six years and wishes him all the best in his future endeavours, both on and off the pitch.
