Unai Simón extends his contract with Athletic Club until 2029

The iconic goalkeeper has signed a four-year contract, without a buy-out clause, whilst at the peak of his career

Athletic Club goalkeeper Unai Simón has put pen to paper on a new four-year deal which will keep him in Bilbao until 30 June 2029.

At 26 years of age, the shotstopper has taken this step whilst at the top of his career. Simón has been in fantastic form this season, having kept 16 clean sheets to put him in reach of winning the Zamora Trophy and help Athletic achieve the Copa del Rey and a fifth-place finish in LaLiga.

He signed this new agreement, which does not contain a release clause, at San Mames just before he heads to Germany to play in this summer’s European Championships as the Spanish national team’s undisputed no.1.

Athletic president Jon Uriarte and director of football Mikel González were also present at the signing.

Unai has demonstrated once again that he sees his future at Athletic Club. He joined the club at under-14 level before making his way through the ranks to the first team, where he has made 194 appearances in the last six seasons.

Simón’s importance goes far beyond his performances on the pitch, his character and sense of team spirit have been instrumental in the development of Julen Agirrezabala, the hero of the Copa final penalty shootout.

He is the fourth-most capped Athletic player in Spanish national team history in terms of international appearances as a Lion, with only Joseba Etxeberria, José Angel Iribar and Julen Guerrero ahead of him.

In addition to Euro 2024, Simón featured at World Cup 2022, Euro 2020 and helped Spain win the 2023 Nations League thanks to his saves in the penalty shootout against Croatia.
