The Opponents
Head coach: Diego Simeone
The tough-tackling midfielder turned manager has become synonymous with Atlético Madrid since taking over in December 2011. As an Atlético player he won the Copa and LaLiga double in 1995/96, as head coach he's lifted two LaLiga titles (2013/14, 2020/21), one Copa del Rey (2012/13), two European Super Cups (2012, 2018) and two Europa Leagues (2011/12, 2017/18), in addition to two Champions League runners-up medals (2013/14, 2015/16).
Summer signings:
It's been a busy window for Atlético, with plenty of new faces coming in: Julián Álvarez (forward, Man City), Connor Gallagher (midfielder, Chelsea), Robin Le Normand (defender, Real Sociedad), Alexander Sorloth (forward, Villarreal), Juan Musso (goalkeeper, Atlanta) and Clément Lenglet (defender, on loan from FC Barcelona).
Recent form:
It's been a solid start to the campaign for Simeone's charges. They remain unbeaten after the first three fixtures, with draws against Villarreal (2-2), Espanyol (0-0) and a win over Girona (3-0).
Previous Meetings
A LaLiga classic between two clubs with deep roots, the Lions have played Atlético a total of 174 times in the top flight. The first ever meeting was a 2-3 win for Athletic at the Metropolitano in 1929/30.
The Zurigorri's LaLiga record against Atlético stands at: 64 wins, 31 draws and 79 defeats.
We've played Los Colchoneros a whopping 87 times in Bilbao. That's 45 victories, 16 draws and 26 defeats with 167 goals for and 110 against.
San Mames has become something of a bogey stadium for Simeone's side in recent years. From our last five clashes, Los Leones have won three, drawn one and lost one.
Athletic celebrated the end of their 125th anniversary in style last season as we beat Atlético 2-0 at San Mames thanks to goals from Gorka Guruzeta and Nico Williams.
