Valverde: “One of the most important wins of the season”

Ernesto Valverde admitted that Athletic Club's 2-4 win over Deportivo Alaves was vital for his side as they fought hard to win three crucial points at Mendizorrotza.

On the day of Valverde's 500th match as Athletic boss, the Lions went behind and levelled twice before two late moments of magic from Nico Williams secured the victory.

“This victory is incredible for us," the gaffer said. "It’s one of the most important of the season so far, given the situation we were in.”

"It seems that just because your Athletic, people think you’ve got it made, and nobody knows what we’ve been through. It’s a huge relief, and it also falls on my 500th match. It’s a very happy day for me and for everyone.

“I’m still catching my breath. It was a great celebration, especially towards the end. I’m really grateful that the players gave their all for us and for the club. The whole team did brilliantly. We all needed a moment of joy like this for our fans.” 

With their survival secured, the Lions can now look ahead to the final stretch of season and the battle for a European spot.

Valverde said: "It’s always about winning the next match, and we want to win at home against Valencia. It’s a very even contest and we always try to be in the mix. We have high standards because we’re Athletic."
