Valverde: "We're very concerned. We can't be complacent"

This is what the gaffer said after the Lions' 2-0 defeat against RCD Espanyol on Wednesday evening

Ernesto Valverde bemoaned Athletic Club’s loss against RCD Espanyol and reiterated the importance of picking up points in our last two  LaLiga matches of the season.

The Lions fell to a 2-0 defeat in what was a crucial match in terms of the Lions' European aspirations and going a step further away from the relegation battle.

"We're very concerned. We can't be complacent," Valverde said in his post-match press conference.

"When you think you've hit rock bottom, you still don't know how far you can go. Everything depends on getting it right.

"In the first half we had chances to take the lead, and in the second half we couldn’t respond after their goal. I don’t think the opposition wanted the win any more than we did, but they came away with it thanks to their momentum."

The loss means it's vital that the Lions pick up points in their final two fixtures, starting with Sunday's match against RC Celta at San Mames.

Valverde said: "The season ends when it ends. Emotionally, the team is where it is. I know what LaLiga is like. I have experience and I know how things work.

"Every point is priceless, and the value of a win is something only those of us in the thick of it truly understand. It’s a real boost, and we have to fight for it right from the start of the season. We’re in a tight spot right now and we need to pick up points any way we can."
