Valverde: "It was an emotional evening for me and Lekue"
The gaffer was visibly moved in the San Mamés press room after managing the final home match of his third spell as Athletic Club head coach
Ernesto Valverde admitted his last home match as Athletic Club head coach was "an emotional evening" for him as the Lions drew 1-1 with RC Celta at San Mames.
The gaffer expressed his gratitude for the support he has received over the years from both the club and the fans
"It was an emotional evening for me and [Iñigo] Lekue," Valverde said.
"Seeing so many former players on the pitch at the start really moved me. I’ve always felt people’s respect and affection, and that’s something I’m truly grateful for."
As for his immediate future, the Athletic manager said he needs to take "a breath" after a demanding season.
He continued: "It's been a tough year and I think the best thing to do is stop. I won't be coaching for the time being, that's for sure."
