Rego signs new contract until 2030

The Bilbao-born midfielder played 41 matches in his debut season as a Lion, eight of which were in the Champions League

Alejandro Rego and Athletic Club have reached an agreement to extend the midfielder's contract until 30 June 2030.

The academy graduate, a talented footballer with a bright future, played a crucial role during his breakthrough season with the Lions, making 41 appearances, including all eight Champions League fixtures, meaning he was the only outfield player to feature in every match of the competition.

Rego put pen to paper on his new deal at San Mames alongside club president Jon Uriarte and our general director of football, Mikel González.

After taking his first steps in professional football, the midfielder will look to develop further and repay the club’s faith in him.

The midfielder joined Lezama at under-15 level after taking his first steps in football at SD Indautxu and later at Santutxu FC. The tall player made steady progress at Lezama until breaking into the Bilbao Athletic team two seasons ago. Ernesto Valverde then promoted Rego to the first team last summer.

The central midfielder made his debut in the opening match of LaLiga 2025/26, coming on in the closing minutes against Sevilla FC at San Mamés, whilst Beñat Prados’ injury gave him an opportunity for further game time. Rego featured against Arsenal FC in the Champions League and gradually took on a more prominent role, eventually scoring his first goal for the Lions against RCD Mallorca – a strike that secured all three points.

Rego has taken his first step in the top flight, and now the decisive ones remain if he is to live up to the Club’s faith in him. According to Mikel González, Rego “has confirmed the expectations he generated in previous seasons at Lezama, playing more than 40 matches in his debut year at the highest level. He has the qualities and potential for a defensive midfielder profile that is difficult to find.”
