Elene Gurtubay signs deal until 2029

Athletic Club Woman Elene Gurtubay has renewed her contract until 30 June 2029. 

The 18-year-old midfielder has just won the European Under-19 Championship with the Spanish national team in Bosnia and will continue her development as a Lioness over the next three seasons.

Gurtubay made her first-team debut on 7 December 2025 and has played 21 competitive matches and scored one goal for Athletic since then. In her first season at the top level, she featured in 18 Liga F matches, two Copa de la Reina fixtures and one Super Cup encounter, clocking up nearly 1,000 minutes of playing time.

She signed her new deal at Palacio Ibaigane, alongside Athletic Club president Jon Uriarte and Xabier Arrieta, the director of women’s football.

Following the announcement, Elene expressed her delight at the prospect of continuing her development at the club she has always supported.

She said: "It’s a step forward in my career and I’m very grateful for the trust placed in me. I’m also delighted to be remaining part of this great project. This is the club of my life and I’m very proud to represent it. It’s very special to wear this shirt."

As well as establishing herself in the first team, the midfielder also played a part in Athletic Women B’s promotion to the Primera Federación, playing eight matches and scoring two goals.

Having started her career at CD San Inazio, Elene arrived at Lezama in the summer of 2024 from Bizkerre FT, initially joining the Rojiblancos’ reserve team. In her first season as a Zurigorri, she played 26 matches and scored five goals for the Women’s B team, a performance that earned her a place in the senior team under Javi Lerga.

On the international stage, Gurtubay continues to consolidate her position as one of football’s most promising youngsters. This summer, she played a key role with the Spanish Under-19 team as they won the European Championship.
