Athletic Club Women staged a remarkable last-ten-minute fightback to earn a point against Atletico Madrid at a cold and wet Lezama. An Ainhoa Moraza strike plus a brace by Lucía García saw Athletic Club draw 3-3 with Atlético Madrid, who arrived to Bilbao as Primera Iberdrola league leaders.

In the opening stages, Atletico set up camp in Athletic’s half. Andrea de la Nava was called upon to stop a shot by Atletico’s Meseguer. Before the half-hour mark, Amanda and Knaak also threatened De La Nava’s goal. Just before hand, Moraza had gone one-on-one with Peyraud but couldn’t find the net.

In the 33rd minute, the visitors found the breakthrough courtesy of Deyna. Athletic looked to get back into the match, with Lucía, Nekane and Erika Vázquez all having efforts.

The equaliser came in the 41st minute, Moraza took advantage of a horrendous defensive blunder to score her first goal of the season and put Athletic back on level terms.

After the restart, the lionesses could have gone ahead. Lucía played through Erika, but Van Dongen thwarted the danger. Minutes later, striker Ludmila got on the end of a cross by Deyna and finished well to put Atletico back in the driving seat.

Amanda put Atletico 1-3 up in the 75th minute after connecting with Bernabe’s cross from the left flank.

Ángel Villacampa’s lionesses didn’t give in though. In the 84th minute a lethal counter-attack launched by Jone Ibañéz saw Yulema Corres set up Lucía for her seventh goal of the campaign.

At 2-3, neither side could take control of possession. Amanda could have seen off the match and at the other end Erika went close to equalising. Lucía went even closer, hitting the post in the 88th minute. De La Nava, who put in a sensational shift, was ever alert and stopped two shots.

The golden moment came in the 94th minute, right at the death. Lucía García netted a second of the match and the equaliser in a nail-biting end to the fixture.

The lionesses went looking for a winner but had to settle for a well-deserved point. Next week presents the side with a new opportunity to get back to winning ways as they take on Sporting de Huelva.
