Athletic Club Women fall to derby defeat

Real Sociedad win an emotional match at San Mamés after the Lionesses conceded an an own goal

undefined

Athletic Club Women lost 0-1 against Real Sociedad at San Mames, with Ainhoa Moraza scoring an unfortunate own goal from a corner in the 13th minute.

Although Peke went close to equalising with a left-footed shot in injury time. The early strike was enough to see the San Sebastian-based side win on their first visit to The Cathedral.

It was an imperfect party for Athletic, in a match which brought six thousand people to San Mamés.

The Bertsoderbi was held for the first time at a women’s match and the occasion was used to pay tribute to the legendary former Athletic goalkeeper Ainhoa Tirapu, who had not received the emotional applause she deserved when she retired due to the pandemic.

Joined by her idol José Ángel Iribar, he gave her a shirt signed by the Athletic players and she received a beautiful farewell bertso (an improved Basque poem) that brought tears to her eyes.

She left the goalkeeping in good hands, because Mariasun Quiñones, signed from Real in the summer, made a handful of good saves. But overall, Athletic struggled to create chances.

La Real twice threatened with Amaiur, either side of the own goal by Ainhoa Moraza’s, who was otherwise one of Iraia Iturregi’s best players on the day.

Nekane and Paula Arana both had attempts before the break, but the first big chance fell to Ane Azkona, who failed to beat the visitors’ goalkeeper when put through one-on-one by a great pass from Yulema Corres.

Las Rojiblancas kept looking for an equaliser and had a last-ditch chance at the feet of new signing Peke. However, Real ended up taking the win.
