Petxarroman: “I’m ready to make my San Mames debut”

After making his debut in the derby against Real Sociedad, Athletic Club defender Alex Petxarroman said he is “ready and excited” to make play at San Mames for the first time

Athletic Club defender Alex Petxarroman admitted he cannot wait to be given the opportunity to play at San Mamés. The right-back insisted he would be ready if called upon to play in Friday’s LaLiga clash with Cádiz CF at The Cathedral (21:00 CET).

The full-back got his first competitive minutes during last Sunday’s Basque Derby at the Reale Arena, a fixture which is extra special for Alex as he is from San Sebastian and joined Athletic Club from Real Sociedad in the summer.

“Because of the atmosphere, and because it was a derby, it was a special day for me,” Petxarroman said in a pre-match press conference ahead of the Lions’ match against Cádiz. “I felt comfortable on the pitch, I was quite involved, and in that respect, I’m happy.”

When asked about the wait to make his Athletic debut, Petxarroman was philosophical about it, saying: “In football there are many circumstances, we always want to play, but we can’t always do it. I knew I was coming to a new club and going up a couple of divisions.

“The important thing is that the team is doing well, that we win and that I give my all in training. The team is at a high level  thanks to the intensity and quality of the training sessions. Marcelino asks me to be ready and I am.”

Petxarroman warned the match on Friday against Cadiz will be “difficult”, saying: “We’ll use everything we’ve got to go for the win and get three more points. We’re looking forward to seeing San Mames full again and we want to give the fans another victory to celebrate.”
