All the facts and stats ahead of Athletic’s final home match of the season, against CA Osasuna

Athletic Club host CA Osasuna in our last home match of the 2021/22 campaign. Marcelino’s side are still in the race for Europe and welcome an Osasuna side who are five points behind Athletic in LaLiga Santander.

After recent results, Los Rojiblancos are four points away from seventh position, the qualifying spot for next season’s Conference League. To have a shot at qualification, the Lions must win their final two fixtures and hope seventh-placed Villarreal do not earn more than two points from their remaining matches against Real Sociedad and FC Barcelona.

The Opponents

Club Atlético Osasuna was founded on October 24, 1920, playing its first ever match on the same day. In recent history, Osasuna have qualified for the Champions League once and played in the UEFA Cup four times, reaching the semi-finals in 2006/07.

After 14 consecutive years in the Primera División, Osasuna were relegated to the Segunda in 2013/14, kicking off a period of yo-yoing. In 2015/16, two years after dropping out of the top flight, they regained their place in the top tier after beating Girona in the play-offs. But their return lasted just one year, as they were relegated again the following season.

Osasuna the won the LaLiga SmartBank under current head coach Jagoba Arrasate in 2018/19 and have remained in the top tier ever since.

Los Rojillos are coming to The Cathedral on the back of three consecutive draws – against Getafe CF, RCD Espanyol and Elche CF – a 1-3 loss to Real Madrid and an away win over Valencia CF.

When it comes to the 40 matches played at The Cathedral, Athletic have a favourable record: 22 victories, 11 draws and seven defeats.

Los Rojiblancos have two wins, two draws and one defeat from Osasuna’s last five visits to Bilbao.

Athletic picked up all three points in this season’s reverse fixture at El Sadar, with an Oihan Sancet hat-trick leading the Lions to a 1-3 win.
