Despite losing 2-1 to Newcastle, Ernesto Valverde believes Athletic "improved with the match"
Despite the defeat, Ernesto Valverde said Athletic's 2-1 against Newcastle United was an important test for his Lions ahead of the new season.
Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin gave the hosts the lead, before Raúl García pulled one back for Los Rojiblancos, who had plenty of chances to find an equaliser.
"It was a very good test for us. There was a fantastic atmosphere at this great stadium and we took on a good team who return to competition next week," Valverde said in his post-match press conference
"It's a pre-season game and what we're interested in is getting to know these opponents and having matches that make things difficult for us, so I'm happy content with what I've seen."
Athletic struggled in the first half, but got better as the match went on. In the final 30 minutes, the Lions were in complete control with Newcastle barely getting a touch of the ball.
"I think we improved during the match. At the beginning we showed our opponents too much respect," the head coach added. "Newcastle were strong, they're physically impressive team, but little by little, we took control of the game despite conceding that early goal.
"In the first half we had chances to score and then, as the game progressed, many more clear opportunities. It was a pity we conceded a goal on the counter because the second half was ours and we were close to getting a result."
